The Role

Macquarie University Health is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Neurodegenerative Disease Fellow to provide high-quality clinical assessment, management and consultation for patients with neurodegenerative and neurological conditions across Macquarie University Hospital (MUH) and MQ Health Clinics.

Reporting to the Neurology Clinical Supervisor(s), you will deliver advanced specialty movement disorder care within your approved scope of clinical practice, provide timely inpatient and outpatient management, and act as a specialist liaison in collaboration with accredited practitioners and broader multidisciplinary teams. You will also have the opportunity to participate in our Motor Neuron Disease Clinic, which offers a cutting edge specialist clinical services to patients for treatment and through research activities.

You will contribute meaningfully to education through the supervision and support of junior doctors, medical students, nursing and allied health staff. As an academically integrated organisation, you will also be actively involved in research, clinical quality projects, accreditation activities, peer review, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Provide clinical service within your approved clinical scope to patients of Macquarie University Health.
  • Participate in and fulfil all duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Fellowship training plan.
  • Deliver timely inpatient and outpatient clinical assessment and management as delegated by clinical supervisor(s) and in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Provide specialist consultation and liaison services to patients and accredited practitioners across MUH and Clinics.
  • Work collaboratively with allied health professionals and the wider multidisciplinary care team.

Administrative responsibilities include:

  • Attend Discipline, Program and MQ Health meetings as required.
  • Participate in Morbidity and Mortality meetings and other compulsory sessions as directed.
  • Provide at least four weeks’ notification of planned leave, ensuring appropriate coverage is arranged and approved.
  • Notify clinical supervisor(s) of any event that may give rise to a complaint or medico-legal concern and complete relevant incident reports.

Quality and Research activities include:

  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement projects at the Discipline, Program, MUH and MQ Health levels.
  • Ensure compliance with ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
  • Engage in peer review, clinical audit, M&M, sentinel event reviews, and root cause analysis as required.
  • Support the systematic review of clinical performance and contribute to patient complaint reviews when needed.

Supervision, Training and Education:

  • Provide multidisciplinary supervision and clinical teaching to nursing, allied health, junior medical staff and students.
  • Assist in education delivery, including grand rounds, journal clubs and relevant training sessions.
  • Present at internal or external conferences and academic forums as required.
  • Offer mentorship and guidance to learners within the Discipline.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in relevant specialty training and exam preparation where appropriate.
  • Work with clinical supervisor(s) to identify development opportunities and implement a professional development plan.
  • Maintain evidence of Continuing Medical Education and Development.

Note: This position requires you to comply with Immunisation Screening in line with Macquarie University Health requirements and Accreditation with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). This position also requires a current and valid Working with Children Check Clearance (WWCC) for NSW.  You will also have to satisfy MQ Health that you meet all background checks (including criminal history check completed as part of our pre-employment checks process).

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification and registration as a medical practitioner in Australia.
  • Successful completion of FRACP written and clinical examinations, or equivalent with eligibility for FRACP recognition.

  • Eligible to be an active Accredited Practitioner of MUH.
  • Proven commitment to medical education and research.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with patients and health professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to continuous improvement, evidence-based practice, and promoting a culture of safety, innovation and best practice.
